Looking to move from "Stepford" to Worcester....

Hi Everyone! I came across this site while looking for info on living in Worcester -- this is great! We live in a very homogeneous town east of Worcester, and have been exploring all that Worcester has to offer. But people around my town (Stepford...) keep telling me to stay away, the schools are bad, crime, etc., etc. Frankly I think they are all just totally paranoid, and that is why they live here -- I love Worcester and head there all the time (I work in Shrewsbury). Any hints, reassurances, advice? Any inside hints on say Doherty High? I know it seems most of you are home-schooling, but maybe you have inside info... Also, what about the arts? I would love to hear from any of you!

Hi Anita,

I'm a mom to be so I'm not quite thinking about schools yet. I'm glad you love Worcester - I do too most of the time. I think living in an urban area is great for all people - moms, dads, kids because of the proximity to other people and creative things to do. I grew up in one of the most boring suburban areas ever and it too me years to process all the materialism and homogenity I had been exposed to. And the good thing about Worcester is that it really isn't too far from getting to some really great outdoorsy places if you do need to "escape".

Anyway, here are some ideas/things you might be interested in that I know about:
Worcester Tornadoes, free passes to museums throughout Central Mass at the kids section of the Worcester Public Library, free old-fashioned movies at the Worcester Public Library on Saturdays, free Wednesday concerts at Mechanics Hall, the Artichoke Food Coop, Worcester's community gardens and urban farm (www.recworcester.org), Broad Meadow Brook, walking around Boynton Park near the airport especially in the fall, Zia's restaurant on Shrewsbury Street - best weekend brunch EVER (she also periodically does cool cooking classes), Clark University's Cinema 320 for alternative movies, Worcester Art Museum (free on Saturday mornings - lots of classes/events for all ages), Elm Park concerts in the summer, Corner Grille pizza, Saori Worcester, hikes led by the Greater Worcester Land Trust, taking the train to Boston on the weekend just to be on the train and not in the car...

hi, anita. nice to meet you. just wanted to say hi. i have trouble keeping up here but i like it when i do.

i am not from worcester but have lived here for 9 years. before that i lived in lowell for fifteen years. i like both towns. although i have not had lots of time to check out the bowels of worcester. since my youngest weaned it has been easier. i don't have any babies any more and that frees me up a bit. i am not afraid of this town. it doesn't seem like a big city to me. i have had to seek out creative people. as a creative person myself it is vital to me to have a creative community to draw from and hopefully give back to.

i am in the dark about the schools as we homeschool. but hopefully as this board grows we will hear more about that topic.

i am quite tired now and should probably sign off. just one word. i went to the traina center at clark today for the magic city repairs event. IT WAS TERRIFIC!!!! the opening is the thursday afternoon and there will be more time then to construct more buildings and structures for this cool city that is being built by the public. just show up and build on thursday for a couple of hours before the opening. the event is from 2-7 with the official opening being at 5:00. we were there for 4 hours and could have stayed longer. i haven't seen my kids in such a groove for an extended period of time for a while. i need to get a post up about it here soon. am just real tired now.

Hi Anita,

I graduated from Doherty High in 1995. My experience was that the building was very old and in need of alot or repairs. The text books I used were over 10 years old and it was almost impossible to get into a music or art class. I tried to get into one all four years. A friend of mine who just moved from Texas went to the Worcester Police Department to find out specific information about all of the high schools in Worcester. Based on that information she chose Burncoat High. Doherty may have changed in some positive ways but I would not send my daughter there. I hope my input has been helpful.
